OMNIX3
~~~~~~
Mutisynch swithbox
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
from ACE pres Swavek Jabrzemski
A month or so ago I read in one of the on-line mags about OMNIX3, a multisync
switchbox from Omnimon Peripherals (of DEKA, Omnichrome, HD floppy kit etc.
fame).
The ad said amongst others that because it was purely electronic, with
no mechanical components whatsoever, it offered considerable mono - and even
color - improvement over other switchboxes.
Until now I've been using Omniswitch from Talon Technology, which is a
_very versatile_ unit, offering: 9 and 15 pin multisync and mono and color
monitor inputs/switch button, floppy B and C inputs/switch button, a socket
for a monitor cable to go to your ST, and audio and video out RCA's (sort
of like the old Monitor Master, Drive Master and more, all in one).
Having just recently upgraded from NEC to NEC 3D, AND sold my mono monitor,
and mono being my principal mode - I of course rang them up the same night
and ordered it.
The box arrived two days ago. The actual case is nothing to rave about, in
fact it must have had another purpose originally, and has been somewhat
crudely "adapted" for its current porpose. It has a single 15 pin monitor
socket, one RCA for audio out, a permanently attached cable to plug into
your ST, and another - a 3-way ribbon cable - which has on its end two
pressure pads, labelled "mono" and "color".
I can't say if and how different it is in color; colors seem to be a bit
more "juicy", but than again it may be because it says they should be.
In mono, however, there is an improvement. Not staggering, but still
worthwhile. While the characters' thickness does not seem to have changed,
they are now better defined, do not have those ever so slightly slightly
fuzzy edges to them, and remain perfectly legible no matter what you do to
contrast and brightness.
All in all, I would recommend it to anyone who has a multisync and uses it
in mono a lot.
The only problem so far - turning a halogen desk lamp on/off and unplugging
a transformer from a power extension board seems to cause the monitor to
reboot and change resolution, but I notified Omnimon of the problem and
hopefully they'll come up with an answer.
